“When you said I did not have to pay anything I was surprised, and thankful. What a great program to have helping veterans in need with these items. When my husband comes home from rehabilitation he will be so thankful to have these items to help him take care of himself”.
Robert – United States Air Force Veteran
Robert recently moved into his apartment after being homeless for close to a year. Because he was homeless prior to his move, he did not have belongings and very few clothes.
Robert was given a referral to Americans for Independent Living in hopes we could help with furnishings for his apartment. He was able to receive a couch and love seat, end table, lamp and basic kitchen items. He also received clothes and towels to help him get started with his independence.
He told Americans for Independent Living, “You just don’t know what it is like. I have an apartment now, it’s not much but it’s my own. And to come in and have nothing to sit on, nothing to sleep on or cook with, you feel like you are homeless all over again”. When asked what he was feeling after receiving the items from AFIL, “Wow, I have a home now, you can’t know what this means to me. I feel like a person again”.
